No one knows about the true horror of rape better than a little girl and her family from
4 Khanewal. Nadia , just seven years old, was on her way home from school one afternoon,
when she was lured into a wheat plantation by a 14-year-old boy, and raped. Her cries alerted
people nearby, and the boy fled the scene. Nadia was taken to a nearby hospital where the
doctors immediately operated upon her. Due to the seriousness of the attack, Nadia had
suffered serious harm to her internal organs.
Nadia’s family registered a First Information Report (FIR), subsequent to which an arrest was
made. Despite receiving widespread media coverage, the case kept getting delayed because
of incomplete evidence and witnesses’ refusal to testify in court. Nadia’s parents were also
pressurized to withdraw the charges by the family of the accused. A year and four months
after the incident, when the boy’s family applied for bail, Nadia’s distressed mother
approached DLAC-Khanewal.
After careful consideration, a case was registered by the Center
on behalf of Nadia’s family on August 8, 2015 and pursued on
priority basis. The case proved very challenging due to partial
evidence but after a long-drawn trial, the case was decided in
Nadia’s favor.
The Sessions Judge, Khanewal sentenced the accused, classified
as a juvenile offender, to 15 years’ imprisonment under the
Pakistan Penal Code for committing rape (Section 376-1) and
imposed a fine of PKR 100,000 under the Code of Criminal
Procedure as compensation for causing injury (Section 544-A).
